1. AfriNEAD Symposium 2009


The A-PODD research team presented a total of eight papers at the Second AfriNEAD Symposium held in South Africa, Cape Town from 30th – 3rd December 2009. The papers covered areas on inclusion of disability in PRSPs, inclusion in higher education, impact of research evidence in disability mainstreaming, ethical issues in disability research, sexuality, HIV/AIDS and disability, human rights approach in poverty reduction strategies, and indigenous knowledge.

2. International Disability Conferences


(a) Dr Tsitsi Chataika will be one of the plenary speakers at the International Disability Conference in Malaysia, which is taking place in Sarawak State, Kuching from the 28th July- 29th July 2010. The theme of the Conference is: “Perspective on Inclusive Development: Embracing Diversity and Creating Disability-sensitive Communities”. Her plenary topic is: “The anecdote of disability-poverty-development: Three unconnected songs or a synchronised melody?”

(b) Dr Tsitsi Chataika and Dr Margaret Wazakili will be presenting at the Disability Studies Conference to be held at Lancaster University in UK from the 7th-9th September, 2010.

They will present the following papers:
  • Dr Wazakili - Triple disadvantage: disability and gender sensitive prevention of HIV and AIDS through the eyes of young people with physical disabilities.
  • Dr Chataika - Disability and Development Intersecting with Postcolonialism: Unpacking the ‘ins’ and ‘outs’ and narrowing the gap between Southern and Northern spaces.

  • They will both do a poster presentation on the exploration of disability news coverage in Uganda and Malawi

    3. A-PODD Research Visits


    Dr Margaret Wazakili and Dr Tsitsi Chataika will be going to Ethiopia and Sierra Leone respectively towards the end of September 2010 for their second research visits for more data collection and sharing with informants the preliminary findings from the first research visit, undertaken earlier this year. Prof Mac MacLachlan from Trinity College Dublin, who is A-PODD’s principal investigator, will be joining Dr Chataika in Sierra Leone.
