Background
Malawi is a landlocked country, on a land area of 94,079 sq km and a total area of 118,480 sq km, including the lake. It is located in southeast Africa, and is surrounded by Mozambique, Zambia, and Tanzania. Lake Malawi occupies most of the country's eastern border, about one third of the country. The north-south Rift Valley is surrounded by mountain ranges and high plateau areas. The 2008 population estimates are 13,931,831 with a growth rate: 2.3%); birth rate: 41.7/1000; infant mortality rate: 90.5/1000; life expectancy: 43.4; density per sq km: 148.
There is a dearth of relevant disability research that has been conducted in Malawi. A 1983 National Statistical Office (NSO) Survey of Handicapped Persons in Malawi placed the rate of disability in the population at 2.9% and 10 years later it was estimated at 2%. The Federation of Disabled persons in Malawi (FEDOMA) is the umbrella body that deals with all matters pertaining to disability, supported by the Ministry of Disability and the Elderly.
